Alabama secures financing for Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project
Full construction is set to begin on Alabama’s Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project following the completion of financing. The $3.2 billion Phase One of the project is one of the largest infrastructure undertakings in the state’s history.
Financing for the project includes a $2.52 billion Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) loan from the U.S. Department of Transportation, alongside a $550 million Bridge Investment Program grant and a $125 million Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant.
The project will feature a new six-lane cable-stayed bridge across the Mobile River, designed to alleviate traffic congestion on the existing I-10 link, which currently carries up to 100,000 vehicles daily—far exceeding its original design capacity. The new bridge will provide a 65-meter clearance for maritime vessels to access the Port of Mobile and will be equipped with modern tolling and traffic management systems. While the new bridge will be a tolled connection, existing routes such as the Wallace Tunnel, Bankhead Tunnel, and Africatown Bridge will remain free. Construction is expected to proceed through the early 2030s.
