Alabama voting advocates urge student registration ahead of 2026 midterms

Voting advocates are emphasizing the importance of student participation in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections in Alabama. Jessica Fortune Barker, founder of Lift Our Vote, stated that student voter registration is critical to the future of the state's leadership.

The 2026 general election, scheduled for November 3, is a significant midterm year for Alabama. As one of only 13 states that hold major elections in non-presidential years, Alabama will elect its governor, all constitutional officeholders, and all members of the state legislature, including 35 State Senate seats and 105 House seats.

Political analysts note that legislative races have seen a massive increase in campaign costs over the last forty years. Additionally, incumbency has become highly pronounced, with approximately 80% of the legislature running unopposed in the current cycle.
