Iraz Yavaş recovers after 8‑month abdominal skull‑bone storage in Manisa

Iraz Yavaş, a 52‑year‑old mother of three from Dindarlı, Sarıgöl district, survived a severe traffic accident in October 2025 that caused a large acute subdural hematoma. Surgeons at Manisa’s Alaşehir State Hospital performed an emergency decompressive craniectomy, removing a portion of her skull to lower intracranial pressure. The bone fragment was temporarily placed under the skin of her abdominal wall for about eight months while she received intensive care, rehabilitation and monitoring.

In a second‑stage cranioplasty, Op. Dr. Ahmet Sancar Topal, head of neurosurgery, re‑implanted the patient’s own skull bone, securing it with titanium plates and screws. The operation was completed without complications, and Yavaş was discharged in good health, able to resume daily life. The procedure was reported as the first successful cranioplasty of this type performed in a district hospital, with gratitude expressed to the provincial health directorate and the Turkish Ministry of Health for enabling the advanced technique.
