Alagoas candidate numbers drop for 2026 elections

Alagoas will see a significant reduction in the number of candidates for proportional seats in the 2026 elections. Following the registration deadline on August 15, 2026, the state recorded 275 total candidacy requests.

Compared to 2022, the number of candidates for federal and state deputies has dropped by 47.2%, falling from 466 to 246. Specifically, the race for the Alagoas Legislative Assembly has become more concentrated, with only 5 candidates competing for each of the 27 available seats, down from 10.4 candidates per seat in 2022. For federal deputy positions, the ratio has decreased from 20.4 candidates per seat to 12. While the total number of candidates is lower, the competition remains concentrated as the number of available seats remains fixed.
