Alagoas judge grants provisional liberty to murder suspect in Penedo

A judge in Alagoas has ordered the provisional release of Damião Alves dos Santos, who is under investigation for the fatal stabbing of 39-year-old Edineide Oliveira in Penedo. The incident occurred on Monday in the Santo Antônio neighborhood, where Oliveira was struck in the neck with a knife and died at the scene.

Following the crime, the suspect fled but was located on Tuesday in the rural area of Igreja Nova. During his arrest, the suspect reportedly confessed to the killing and surrendered a knife, claiming his intention was to target the victim's son-in-law, but that Oliveira had inadvertently stepped in front of the attack.

Judge Lucas Lopes Dória of the 4th Criminal Court of Penedo ruled that while the arrest was legal, there were insufficient grounds to maintain preventive detention. Dos Santos must now comply with several judicial conditions to remain free, including monthly appearances at the forum, a prohibition on leaving the municipality without authorization, and mandatory attendance at all scheduled legal proceedings. Failure to comply may result in re-arrest.
