Alagoas political landscape shifts as JHC runs for Governor and Lira for Senate

The political landscape in Alagoas has shifted significantly as candidates finalized their registrations for the 2026 elections. João Henrique Caldas, known as JHC (PSDB), officially confirmed his candidacy for the governorship of Alagoas. This decision follows previous indications that he might run for the Senate, a move that would have avoided a direct confrontation with his ally, Arthur Lira (PP). JHC's running mate will be Célia Rocha (PSDB), the former mayor of Arapiraca.

Arthur Lira has officially registered his candidacy for the Senate. In his mandatory asset declaration to the TSE, Lira reported a net worth of approximately R$ 25.96 million, representing a 335% nominal increase compared to his 2022 declaration of R$ 5.97 million. His assets include properties in Pernambuco and Brasília, as well as significant fixed-income investments. Lira will run alongside Marina Candia (PSDB) for one of the state's two Senate seats.

Renan Filho (MDB) is also a major contender for the governorship, having selected Yale Fernandes as his vice-gubernatorial candidate. The race between JHC and Renan Filho is considered highly competitive, with recent polls showing both candidates at approximately 46% support. Additionally, the Federal Police have launched an investigation into the management of Maceió's pension funds regarding investments in Banco Master, a matter occurring amidst these political developments.
