Alagoas Public Prosecutor sues state over lack of special prison custody rooms

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Alagoas (MPAL) has filed a public civil action to compel the state to create and provide 'Salas de Estado-Maior' (Staff Rooms). These specialized facilities are legally required for the custody of individuals entitled to special prison status.

The legal action follows the identification of a lack of infrastructure meeting these legal requirements. The issue was highlighted by the case of a lawyer who, despite a first-instance conviction, had not yet reached a final judgment and was therefore entitled to special custody. Due to the absence of adequate facilities, she was instead placed in a women's wing of the prison system.

Both the Secretariat of Resocialization and Social Inclusion (SERIS) and the Alagoas Military Police have indicated they currently lack the facilities to meet these legal standards. Prior to the lawsuit, the MPAL had issued recommendations to the state government and security agencies to construct or adapt suitable spaces within 180 days.
