Alóag–Unión del Toachi highway closed due to landslides
The Alóag–Unión del Toachi highway, a critical connection between the Sierra and Costa regions of Ecuador, remains closed in both directions following landslides caused by heavy rainfall. The closure affects sections near kilometer 53 and kilometer 54+900.
Authorities from the Pichincha Prefecture have deployed personnel and machinery to clear the debris from the roadway. As of Saturday, October 24, cleanup operations are ongoing, but no official time for the reopening of the road has been confirmed.
Drivers are advised to use the Mitad del Mundo–Río Blanco route as an alternative to travel between the highlands and the coast. The area remains under alert due to intense precipitation and recent weather-related emergencies in the Pichincha province.
