Alajo residents fear cholera outbreak as flood‑left waste piles up
Residents of Alajo, a neighbourhood in Accra, Ghana, say that heaps of refuse left behind after recent floods could trigger a cholera outbreak if heavy rain returns. They reported that waste‑collection trucks cleared only part of the rubbish before becoming full and did not return, leaving large volumes of waste near homes and drains. The community warned that rain‑water could carry the debris into houses and the drainage system, increasing disease risk. Residents also highlighted the presence of food traders operating close to the waste piles and the prohibitive cost of hiring private collectors, which many cannot afford. They are urging the government to clear the refuse promptly and to provide food, shelter and other relief to families affected by the flooding.
