Alaksandr Milinkiewicz, Belarusian opposition leader, dies at 79
Alaksandr Milinkiewicz, a prominent leader of the Belarusian democratic opposition, has died at the age of 79. His death was reported on Tuesday morning by independent Belarusian media outlets, citing information from his family.
A physicist and former deputy mayor of Grodno, Milinkiewicz was a central figure in the struggle for democracy in Belarus. He served as the joint democratic candidate in the 2006 presidential election against Alexander Lukashenka. Following that election, which the opposition deemed fraudulent, he participated in protests in Minsk.
Between 2007 and 2016, he led the 'For Freedom' social movement. In recent years, he lived in exile following the 2020 wave of political repression and served as a social advisor to opposition leader Sviatlana Tsichanouskaya. He was also a co-founder of the Free Belarusian University in Poland.
Milinkiewicz was a recipient of several prestigious honors, including the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought from the European Parliament and the Kazimierz Pułaski 'Knight of Freedom' Award. He was recognized for his lifelong commitment to human rights and democratic values.
