Alamal River Beach in Gavião gets €325,000 tourism grant for storm repairs

The municipality of Gavião in Portugal’s Portalegre district will receive about €325,000 from the national Programa Crescer com o Turismo to restore equipment at the Alamal river beach that was damaged by February storms. The grant is part of a wider programme that supports 33 tourism projects across the North, Centre, Alentejo and Ribatejo regions, with a total investment of €3.3 million.

Mayor António Severino said the town has already spent roughly €225,000 on the beach, bringing the total expected investment to around €400,000. Work so far includes sand replenishment and the opening of a modular snack‑bar structure, while the inn remains closed and further repairs will wait until after the bathing season. A contract‑signing ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday at 17:00 on the beach. The mayor estimated that the February weather caused about €2 million in municipal damages, not counting private losses.
