Alameda County negotiates contract renewal with fair association
The Alameda County Board of Supervisors is engaged in tense negotiations regarding a contract renewal with a nonprofit fair association. The contract, originally signed in 2017, is set for a five-year renewal on September 30. While the board has the authority to terminate the agreement, supervisors have expressed a desire to maintain the partnership.
Discussions are currently focused on resolving issues related to permitting, transparency, and communication. Board President David Haubert has suggested tying contract modifications directly to the renewal process to increase leverage and urgency. Although Haubert proposed extending the September 30 deadline, the fair board has reportedly declined that option.
Supervisor Nate Miley noted that the county's current responsibilities are extensive and suggested that managing a county fair may fall outside the county's primary scope. He emphasized the need for amendments that ensure supervisors maintain oversight and approval authority. Negotiators are scheduled to meet again this week, with a follow-up board meeting set for September 29.
