Alameda County pays $12 million settlement in Sophia Mason death case

The Alameda County Board of Supervisors approved a $12 million settlement to Sylvia Johnson, the grandmother of 8‑year‑old Sophia Mason, who was found dead in a Merced home in 2022 after prolonged abuse. The agreement also provides for the release of a county‑ordered independent investigation, a public memorial bench in a Hayward park, and includes 25 recommendations to reform the county’s child‑welfare system.

Sophia’s mother, Samantha Johnson, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and child abuse and was sentenced to nearly 16 years in prison; the murder charge against the boyfriend was later dropped. A state‑ordered review found serious deficiencies in Alameda County’s handling of abuse reports, including long response times and incomplete documentation, prompting California’s Department of Social Services to place the county under formal intervention and monitoring.
