Alan acquires Senegalese fintech Tanel to expand into Africa

French health insurer Alan has entered the African market through the acquisition of Tanel, a Senegalese fintech startup specializing in digital health insurance. While the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the acquisition serves as a strategic platform for Alan to expand across the continent.

Founded in 2021 by Mouhamed Ndoye and Makhtar Diop, Tanel operates in Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire, providing digital health coverage to companies and their employees. The startup manages a network of over 1,200 healthcare providers, including pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics. Unlike many platforms that merely administer third-party contracts, Tanel directly assumes insurance risk.

Following the acquisition, Tanel’s founders will continue to lead local operations and play a key role in Alan’s West African development. With Alan’s technological support, the company aims to grow its membership from its current base to one million members by 2030. This move follows Alan’s established presence in France, Spain, Belgium, and Canada.
