Australian courts hold trials for sexual misconduct allegations

Two separate criminal trials are underway in Australia involving allegations of sexual misconduct.

In Melbourne, Lachlan Young, 24, is facing trial at the County Court of Victoria. He is accused of raping a 16-year-old girl in a Sebastopol backyard in February 2024. The prosecution alleges that while some sexual activity was consensual, Young proceeded to commit rape after the girl refused penetrative sex. Young has pleaded not guilty.

In Sydney, veteran broadcaster Alan Jones is standing trial at the Downing Centre Local Court. Jones faces 22 charges, including 20 counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual touching without consent, involving six male complainants. The allegations span from 2003 to 2020.

During the proceedings, witnesses have provided testimony regarding the alleged incidents. This includes the mother of one complainant, who described her shock when the allegations surfaced, and the ex-girlfriend of an athlete, who denied claims that she was offered money to testify. A former radio station employee is also expected to testify regarding alleged assaults occurring during their time working together at 2GB. Jones has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
