Alan Mandell, acclaimed Beckett interpreter and actor, dies at 98

Alan Mandell, a renowned classical actor, producer, and director known for his extensive work with the plays of Samuel Beckett, has died at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 98.

Mandell was a pivotal figure in American regional theater. After beginning his career in Toronto, he joined the San Francisco Actor's Workshop in 1954, helping transform it into a major West Coast institution. His work with Beckett was significant; he maintained a professional relationship with the playwright, who directed him in productions of ‘Waiting for Godot’ and ‘Endgame’ in Europe.

One of his most notable contributions was the co-founding of the San Quentin Drama Workshop with inmate Rick Cluchey. Following a performance of ‘Waiting for Godot’ at San Quentin State Prison, the program became the first extended prison theater program in the United States, providing therapeutic and creative outlets for inmates.

Later in his career, Mandell served as a consulting director and actor for the Los Angeles Theatre Center and assisted with the Repertory Theatre at Lincoln Center.
