Brazil implements R$ 100 billion rural credit renegotiation and climate risk measures

Brazil is implementing various measures to support the agricultural sector against climate and financial risks. Provisional Measure 1.376/2026 authorizes the renegotiation of approximately R$ 100 billion in rural credit. This measure aims to assist producers affected by adverse weather and market fluctuations between 2019 and 2025 by offering longer payment terms and new guarantee mechanisms.

To address climate volatility, Embrapa has proposed 163 measures to help the agribusiness sector prepare for the potential effects of El Niño on the 2026/27 harvest. These recommendations include irrigation, crop diversification, and improved livestock management. Additionally, more than 40 agribusiness entities have called for changes to the credit renegotiation rules, citing barriers such as high down payment requirements and inconsistent bank evaluations.

In the realm of technical support, Afubra and Embrapa Clima Temperado have renewed a technical cooperation agreement valid until 2030. This partnership focuses on innovation and technology transfer for family farming, specifically regarding the multiplication of sweet potato and elephant grass cultivars.
