Alana S. Portero releases new novel inspired by Spanish Civil War
Author Alana S. Portero has released her new novel, Cosamala (Seix Barral), which draws inspiration from the '17 roses of Guillena.' This refers to a group of women from the Seville locality who were executed in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War.
Described as a 'southern gothic novel,' the work blends the historical horror of neighbor-on-neighbor conflict with supernatural elements. Portero stated that her goal was to explore the poetic possibilities of the struggle against fascism and to pay tribute to these women by linking them to a lineage of persecuted women and witches.
