Alar del Rey mayor opposes high-speed rail project
Roberto Santos, the mayor of Alar del Rey, has expressed strong opposition to a proposed 3.2-kilometer railway variant in Nogales de Pisuerga. The project, linked to changes in the high-speed rail line, has not been consulted with the municipality. Santos described the proposed provisional track interchange as a “total absurdity” and argued that the line should continue to Aguilar de Campoo to establish the interchange there instead.
The mayor warned that the current plan could damage the small town of Nogales de Pisuerga and negatively impact local livestock farming and the planned industrial estate in Alar. Additionally, the municipality is facing delays regarding a 6.3 million euro project to eliminate level crossings. While the project has been awarded, technical and maintenance concerns remain, specifically regarding who will bear the costs of underground passages. Santos suggested that safer, more restrictive barriers might serve as a better intermediate solution.
