Alaska 2026 primary election set for Aug. 18 with ballot measure to restore campaign contribution limits

Alaska's statewide primary election is scheduled for August 18, 2026, with early in‑person voting beginning on August 3 and absentee voting already underway. Election officials expect preliminary results between 8:45 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on election night, a final unofficial tally by August 28, and certification of official results by August 31. Recounts must be requested by September 5 and any legal challenges filed by September 10.

A ballot initiative, referred to as Ballot Measure 1, will appear on the same primary ballot. The measure seeks to restore campaign‑finance contribution limits that were removed in 2021. It would set a $2,000 cap on individual contributions, replacing the previous $500 limit, and is slated to take effect for the 2028 elections. The proposal follows Governor Mike Dunleavy’s July 6 veto of House Bill 16, which had aimed to reinstate similar limits. Proponents argue the limits curb the influence of wealthy donors, while the governor has expressed concerns about restricting ordinary Alaskans’ ability to support candidates.
