Alaska Blizzard Warnings issued for Bering Strait and Seward Peninsula
The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has issued blizzard warnings for the Bering Strait Coast, the Seward Peninsula, and Nome, effective from 4 a.m. AKDT Friday. The warnings are part of an expected Bering Sea storm lasting from Friday through Sunday.
The Interior Seward Peninsula is projected to receive between 8 and 15 inches of snow, with wind gusts reaching up to 65 mph. Areas such as Haycock, Taylor, and Council are expected to experience significant visibility reductions due to blowing snow, making travel difficult.
On the Southern Seward Peninsula Coast, including Nome, accumulations of 2 to 6 inches are expected alongside wind gusts of up to 60 mph. The Bering Strait Coast, including Shishmaref and Diomede, may see up to 3 inches of snow and gusts of 60 mph. Strong winds in these coastal areas could lead to power outages, and snow is expected to transition to rain by early Saturday morning.
