Alaska Democrats unite as Tom Begich withdraws from governor's race

Democrat Tom Begich has withdrawn from the Alaska governor's race and endorsed fellow Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins. The decision comes as the Democratic Party seeks to elect its first governor in Alaska in nearly 25 years.

Begich, who finished just behind Kreiss-Tomkins in the August 18 primary, announced that he and running mate Julia Hnilicka are suspending their campaign. The Begich campaign reported raising over $1.3 million but noted that continued competition would require significantly more resources. By withdrawing, Kreiss-Tomkins remains the sole Democrat on the ballot for the November general election.

Under Alaska's ranked-choice voting system, the top four finishers from the primary advance to the general election. The Democratic platform for this cycle focuses on public education funding, housing, healthcare, energy costs, and increasing taxes on the oil and gas industry to ensure the state receives a fair share of resource development.
