Alaska earthquake of magnitude 6.3 strikes near Umnak Island

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck near Umnak Island in the Aleutian Archipelago, Alaska, on September 3. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was located 84 kilometers south-southwest of Nikolski at a depth of 35 kilometers.

Despite the significant magnitude, the USGS PAGER system maintained a green alert, indicating a low probability of significant human or economic loss. The earthquake reached a maximum instrumental intensity of level IV (light shaking) on the Mercalli scale. No immediate reports of casualties or major property damage have been confirmed.
