Trump threatens South Korea with higher tariffs over Alaska LNG project

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to increase tariffs or costs against South Korea if the nation does not commit to the Alaska LNG project. During a press availability at the White House, Trump responded to reports that Seoul had not finalized an agreement for the $54 billion liquefied natural gas venture, stating, “Tell them if they don't sign shortly, I'm going to double it up.”

Trump previously announced that South Korea would invest up to $200 billion in various U.S. energy and infrastructure projects, including the Alaska LNG pipeline, eight nuclear reactors, and a power plant in Texas. He also claimed South Korea would invest $8.4 billion in an Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) project, a statement that South Korean officials noted was not part of existing bilateral agreements.

The South Korean government has maintained that its participation in the Alaska LNG project is subject to commercial viability and domestic legal procedures, and that no final commitment has been made. The project, which involves a pipeline of approximately 1,300 km from the North Slope to Nikiski, has an estimated cost between $44.5 billion and $54.5 billion.
