Alaska judge dismisses lawsuit against Trump offshore drilling expansion
An Alaska federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by environmental groups challenging President Donald Trump’s executive orders to allow offshore drilling in previously protected coastal areas.
U.S. District Judge Sharon L. Gleason ruled that the legal challenge by organizations, including the Northern Alaska Environmental Center, was premature because offshore drilling activities in the affected federal waters are not currently imminent. While the judge did not rule on the legality of a president’s authority to reverse a predecessor’s coastal protections, the decision leaves the door open for activists to refile the case if drilling activities begin.
Earthjustice, which represented the plaintiffs, stated that they maintain the administration’s attempts to open withdrawn areas for oil leasing are unlawful. The group indicated they intend to pursue legal claims once offshore activities are on the horizon. The dispute stems from President Trump’s efforts to undo protections established by former President Joe Biden, aimed at increasing national oil and gas production.
