Alaska LNG project seeks more buyers ahead of investment decision
The Alaska LNG project, a $55 billion initiative, is actively seeking additional buyers to secure the offtake agreements necessary for a final investment decision (FID). Developer Glenfarne Group reports it is in discussions with two potential new buyers to secure an additional 3 million metric tons of capacity. The company aims to have 80% of its 20-million-ton target capacity covered before proceeding.
The project has gained momentum through support from the Trump administration, which has encouraged Japan and South Korea to invest in the project to help reduce their trade surpluses with the United States. Alaska LNG offers shorter Pacific shipping routes to Asian markets compared to Gulf Coast exports, potentially diversifying U.S. export capacity.
In related market activity, South Korean importer Kogas reported a 1.1 percent decrease in gas sales for July compared to the previous year, following a 9.3 percent increase in June.
