Alaska North Slope natural gas reserves estimated at 96 trillion cubic feet

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has released a new assessment estimating that Alaska’s North Slope contains 96 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered and technically recoverable natural gas resources. This figure is nearly triple the 35 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves currently identified in the region.

According to data from the Energy Information Administration, the estimated volume is sufficient to meet nearly three years of total United States consumption. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that these reserves could provide affordable and secure energy to Americans and South Pacific allies for generations.

The assessment aligns with a January 2025 executive order aimed at increasing resource development in Alaska by reversing previous administrative restrictions on state and federal lands. The findings also support the Alaska LNG project, which seeks to transport natural gas from the region.
