Alaska political candidates leverage NRA ratings and authenticity branding

Political candidates in Alaska are utilizing diverse strategies to appeal to voters amidst shifting economic and cultural priorities. The National Rifle Association (NRA) Political Victory Fund has released its grading for various candidates, focusing on Second Amendment rights. In the gubernatorial race, Shelley Hughes, Click Bishop, and Lesil McGuire received A+ grades, while candidates such as Adam Crum and Bernadette Wilson received A grades. U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan and U.S. Representative Nick Begich both earned A+ grades and official NRA endorsements. Conversely, Democratic candidate Tom Begich received an F grade.

Simultaneously, political branding in the state is increasingly leaning into rugged, outdoorsy imagery. Representative Sarah Hill is utilizing a narrative of “real Alaska” authenticity, with her super PAC, “Alaska First,” spending $4.3 million on advertisements highlighting her bear-hunting credentials. This strategy targets a demographic where a majority of voters under 45 prioritize “authentic leadership.” This shift in messaging coincides with economic pressures, including a slowdown in Alaska’s GDP growth to 1.2% in Q2, as the state's oil-dependent industries face global decarbonization trends.
