Alaska's North Slope tundra turns greener due to climate warming

The North Slope tundra in Alaska is experiencing a phenomenon described by researchers as a 'mini jungle' due to rapid climate warming. As the Arctic warms four times faster than the rest of the planet, particularly during winter, the traditionally stunted vegetation is showing signs of increased lushness.

In the vast, treeless region extending from the Brooks Range to the Arctic Ocean, knee-high dwarf birches and small rhododendrons are emerging from the spongy ground. Scientists at the Toolik Field Station are studying these changes to understand how plants evolve to either compete or cooperate under extreme conditions.

Historically, the harsh Arctic climate and permafrost prevented significant plant growth by exposing anything above the snow layer to wind, frost, and herbivores, while also restricting root depth. However, the warming trend is providing researchers with a critical window into how climate change reshapes plant life in extreme environments.
