Alassane Diatta warns poor roads threaten Darou Salam Cherif pilgrimage
Mayor Alassane Diatta of Kataba 1 highlighted that the commune’s roads are in a deteriorated state, with no road in good condition across its 714 km² area that includes 35 villages and more than 30,000 residents. He said the bad roads hinder economic development, product transport and access to religious sites, especially as the Gamou ceremony is scheduled for this month in Darou Salam Cherif.
Diatta appealed for public support, citing the Diomaye Plan for Casamance, and noted that a construction firm has begun work with five trucks and an excavator to improve circulation. Religious leader Mouftah Aïdara echoed the concerns, pointing to difficulties faced by Naran producers in moving goods to Ziguinchor, Diouloulou and Bignona. The mayor’s remarks follow earlier complaints about road conditions affecting religious events in the region.
