Albacete City Council rejects proposed asbestos waste plant

The Albacete City Council has unanimously voted to reject the processing of a proposed large-scale asbestos waste storage facility in the La Castra area. By issuing a certificate of non-conformity, the council has activated regional legal frameworks that can effectively halt the project's environmental impact assessment.

The proposed installation was designed to include nine storage basins with a total capacity exceeding 460,000 cubic meters of asbestos waste. Mayor Manuel Serrano stated that the city would not host a macro-plant intended to serve the recycling and treatment needs of half of Spain, noting that the administration had previously filed objections against the project.

Council members emphasized that the scale of the facility could impact the territory for many years and expressed significant concern regarding the environmental and urbanistic implications for local residents.
