Albania and Argent LNG sign MoU for regional LNG terminal

Argent LNG, a US-based developer, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Albanian government to evaluate the construction of a large-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage and regasification terminal. The proposed facility, potentially located in Vlorë, would have an annual capacity of up to 5 million tons.

The project is intended to serve as a regional energy security hub for the Western Balkans and Southeastern Europe rather than for Albania's domestic consumption. The terminal is designed to interconnect with the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), the proposed Ionian Adriatic Pipeline (IAP), and the Fier-Vlorë gas corridor. This infrastructure could facilitate the delivery of US-sourced, non-Russian LNG to the region and potentially support Ukraine’s energy security through regional market arrangements.

Argent LNG is also developing an export facility in Louisiana, with commercial operations for the Albanian project expected around 2029–2030. Potential financing for the terminal may involve the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), the US Export-Import Bank (EXIM), and the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).
