Albania and Balkan nations emerge as Europe's most affordable tourist hotspots

Albania is increasingly seen as a budget-friendly Mediterranean destination, drawing visitors with its turquoise coast, historic sites such as the ancient amphitheatre in Durrës, and low living costs – a meal can be enjoyed for under 30 €, a night in a double‑room averages about 76 €, and local transport between Tirana and Durrës costs just over 3 €. British journalist Tom Češajr described the country as the “European Maldives” because of its clear waters and fewer crowds.

A separate analysis of short‑term rentals across Europe shows that several Balkan states rank among the cheapest for holiday accommodation in 2026. North Macedonia leads with an average daily rate of 39.81 €, followed by Serbia at 51.17 € and Bosnia‑Herzegovina at 56.33 €. Popular cities such as Skopje, Belgrade and Sarajevo attract tourists seeking cultural experiences at markedly lower prices than Western European resorts.
