Albania and Montenegro selected for EU roaming expansion

The European Commission has announced that Albania and Montenegro are the next countries set to join the ‘Roaming like at home’ zone. Negotiations aim to include both nations in the European roaming system by late 2026 or early 2027.

While the European Union’s broader strategy intends to include all Western Balkan countries in the zone by 2028, North Macedonia was notably absent from this specific phase of negotiations. The announcement does not clarify if North Macedonia has begun a similar process or when it might be integrated.

The ‘Roaming like at home’ principle allows citizens to use mobile internet, calls, and messages while traveling without additional roaming charges. Under these rules, operators are prohibited from slowing down internet speeds, and users must have access to 5G networks with the same quality as in their home country if available.
