At a GLOBSEC panel in Prague (May 20‑23, 2026) officials highlighted growing optimism that Albania and Montenegro will join the European Union. A Barometer survey for the Western Balkans showed overall support for EU membership rising to 64 % in 2025, with the highest backing in Albania (86 %) and Kosovo (78 %).

Panelists warned that if one candidate state accedes before the other, it could deepen political and economic gaps within the Western Balkans. They stressed that continued regional cooperation—such as eliminating roaming fees and allowing passport‑free travel—must remain a priority to avoid new divisions. Experts called for equal treatment of all candidate nations to ensure that EU enlargement strengthens, rather than fragments, the region's cohesion.
