Albania coastal tourism faces praise for beauty and criticism over water quality

Albania is experiencing contrasting reports regarding its coastal tourism appeal. On one hand, the destination Ksamil has been ranked as a top European beach due to its crystal-clear waters, scenic landscapes, and competitive pricing compared to other Mediterranean locations. Travelers seeking alternatives to crowded spots like Santorini are increasingly drawn to the area for its perceived value and tranquility.

Conversely, environmental and visitor reports highlight significant challenges. Data from the European Environment Agency indicates that only 16.8% of Albania's beaches are rated as ‘excellent,’ with 23% of beaches showing poor water quality due to fecal bacteria such as E. coli. Some reports suggest the country faces issues with wastewater and agricultural runoff.
