Albania protests escalate as demonstrators demand Edi Rama's resignation

Violent protests in Tirana have entered their second week, marked by intense clashes between demonstrators and police. Protesters, primarily students and university professors, are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, citing corruption, rising living costs, and poor educational conditions. The unrest was initially sparked by opposition to a luxury tourism project in an ecologically protected area linked to Jared Kushner.

Clashes have escalated, with protesters using stones, fireworks, and Molotov cocktails against government buildings, while police have responded with water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets. The Ministry of Health reports approximately 320 injuries, including police officers and demonstrators. One student was reportedly hospitalized in serious condition after being hit by a rubber bullet.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has accused foreign actors, specifically mentioning Russia and Iran, of waging a ‘hybrid war’ to destabilize the country through orchestrated violence. He has also threatened stricter measures, including potential financial consequences for families of minors involved in violence and restrictions on access to transport and EU services for violent individuals.

In response to the unrest, the Tirana Prosecutor's Office ordered the release of several detained youths, citing procedural irregularities by the police. Meanwhile, the opposition and academic unions continue to call for government accountability and an end to police force against protesters.
