Albania expands oncology services to 12 regional hospitals

Albania is expanding its oncology services through a nationwide initiative to establish chemotherapy centers in 12 regional hospitals. Health Minister Evis Sala and the Director of the National Institute of Oncology, Helidon Nina, recently visited the newly redeveloped chemotherapy day center at Vlora Regional Hospital.

This project is part of a broader reform aimed at decentralizing cancer care. Investments have already been completed at QSUT, Vlora, and Korça, with ongoing work in Shkodër, Lezhë, and Fier. The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is collaborating with the Mane Foundation to requalify several chemotherapy day centers across the country, with a goal to complete the process by 2027.

To strengthen the National Oncology Network, authorities have approved 38 unified treatment protocols and are working to improve infrastructure, equipment, and medication availability. Additionally, a new Breast Unit has been established to provide a multidisciplinary model for diagnosis.
