Albania expands regional chemotherapy services with nine new units

Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that nine new regional chemotherapy units will become operational across Albania, aiming to broaden access to cancer treatment and reduce patient travel to the national oncology centre. The rollout begins at the Regional Hospital in Elbasan, where the chemotherapy service has been running daily since 2017. Hospital director Zheni Gjergji highlighted that the unit, integrated with the oncology clinic, treated 156 patients in the first six months of 2026 and delivered about 256 chemotherapy sessions.

The expansion is intended to bring specialized care closer to patients’ homes, improve service quality, and lower the burden on the central Oncology Hospital. The government plans to replicate this model nationwide, ensuring that cancer patients receive safe and timely treatment throughout the country.
