Albania faces Europe's steepest decline in birth rates

The Western Balkans is facing a deepening demographic crisis characterized by a significant decline in birth rates. Albania has recorded the most severe drop in births in Europe over the last three decades, with a 63.5% decrease between 1997 and 2025. This trend is mirrored across the region, including Kosovo (48.6%), North Macedonia (46.2%), and Bosnia and Herzegovina (45.7%).

While governments in the region have implemented various pro-natalist policies—such as financial bonuses in Albania, significant support for larger families in Serbia, and monthly child support in Kosovo and Montenegro—these measures have largely failed to reverse the trend. Factors contributing to the decline include economic insecurity, high housing costs, difficulties in balancing career and family, and an aging population.

Furthermore, mass emigration of young people from the Western Balkans during their prime reproductive years is exacerbating the crisis. This combination of low fertility and outward migration is leading to smaller family units and a shrinking population that may not be able to sustain current demographic levels in the future.
