Albania faces rapid population aging and shifting youth political attitudes
Albania's median age reached 45 years in 2026, surpassing the European Union average for the first time. The country’s population is aging 4.5 times faster than the EU, driven by low birth rates and sustained emigration. This demographic shift threatens the labor market, strains pension systems, and pressures the health sector to expand geriatric and chronic‑care services.
A separate survey of 1,119 Albanian adults funded by the Konrad‑Adenauer‑Stiftung found that about 48 % of citizens aged 18‑34 did not vote or voted for small parties, while only 24 % of those over 65 did the same. Forty percent of the younger group identified themselves as ideologically centrist, compared with 19 % of the older cohort, indicating a generational divide in political self‑placement.
