Albanian judicial salaries blocked by Treasury dispute
Judicial and prosecutorial organizations in Albania have reported a significant blockage in salary payments for judges, prosecutors, and administrative staff. The issue stems from a failure to execute the financial aspects of Constitutional Court decision no. 15, dated February 17, 2026.
According to the Association of Prosecutors and other judicial unions, the salary formula mandated by the court—which has retroactive effect from April 1, 2023, to July 31, 2026—has been calculated and submitted. However, the Treasury has reportedly halted the actual disbursement of these funds. While some regions like Kukës and Dibra have successfully processed the new payments, much of the system remains unpaid.
The situation has triggered political tension, with the Democratic Party accusing the government of undermining judicial independence. Judicial bodies maintain that the dispute is not about seeking privileges, but about the state's obligation to respect binding constitutional rulings.
