Albania increases border controls at Qafë Thanë amid protests

Police have increased inspections at the Qafë Thanë border crossing for Albanian citizens entering from North Macedonia. Authorities have deployed Border Police and State Police to conduct detailed vehicle checks.

These measures follow suspicions regarding the transport of prohibited items and reports that groups from North Macedonia may be traveling to Tirana to join ongoing protests. The demonstrations in Tirana, which began on October 13, initially focused on student demands for improved university conditions and lower tuition costs. The movement has since expanded to include calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

According to official data, 646 individuals have been processed during ten days of protests, resulting in 283 arrests and 363 individuals facing criminal proceedings while free. A national protest involving students, educators, medical professionals, and business representatives is scheduled in front of the Prime Minister's office on October 24.
