Albania introduces AI and expanded school programs

Albanian schools are implementing several new initiatives for the upcoming academic year, including the integration of artificial intelligence and expanded extracurricular activities. Under the “Pas Shkolle” (After School) program, 408 public schools will offer optional clubs and activities, allowing students to remain on campus for up to two additional hours.

Artificial intelligence is being introduced into the educational process through new guidelines. Teachers are permitted to use AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini for lesson preparation, creating exercises, and tailoring assignments, provided that the teacher remains responsible for final assessments and verification. For students, AI is intended as a tool for understanding concepts or drafting, while direct copying is prohibited to maintain academic integrity.

Additionally, 20 schools will implement AI-powered smart camera systems for enhanced security. These systems use video analysis platforms to identify pre-programmed suspicious or potentially dangerous behaviors and generate alerts for authorities. While the Ministry of Interior states these systems comply with data protection legislation and do not include audio recording, the rollout has prompted discussions regarding surveillance limits and data privacy.
