Albania launches mandatory fuel marking system as gasoline prices rise

The Albanian government has approved a decree requiring every litre of imported or traded fuel to be marked with an invisible traceable code. The system, called the Fuel Integrity Solution, will be operated by the private firm ALBTrace CO and will cost €6.5 per 1,000 litres. Marked fuel will receive a certificate and customs officials will monitor compliance throughout the supply chain, with full implementation expected within six months.

At the same time, gasoline prices at stations in Korçë have risen to about 214 lek per litre, up from 206 lek, despite a recent 11 % drop in international oil prices. Citizens have voiced concern, saying the increase is “very high” and urging the government to intervene to prevent abusive price hikes that affect household budgets.
