Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama expands national “Smart City” safety network

Prime Minister Edi Rama inaugurated the Command and Control Center for Albania’s national “Smart City” project, saying the system will raise public safety to a new level through real‑time monitoring and artificial intelligence. The platform integrates data from 873 operational sites—including police directorates, city centres, border points and schools—and can instantly alert the nearest patrol to potential threats such as unattended weapons, illegal parking or missing persons.

Initial deployment targets 20 high‑traffic schools in Tirana, with plans to extend the network across the entire country. Ministers of Education and the Interior highlighted that the cameras and AI will serve primarily as preventive tools, enabling rapid intervention before incidents occur. The project also includes body‑worn cameras for police to improve accountability. Rama emphasized that the system is designed to inform the control centre in real time, rather than merely record events after they happen, and that it will progressively cover the whole territory.

Officials describe the initiative as a strategic investment that transforms policing, road safety, border monitoring and school protection, establishing a new, integrated approach to public security in Albania.
