Albania navigates geopolitical tensions and EU democratic scrutiny
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has addressed complex geopolitical tensions involving Ukraine, Kosovo, and the European Union. Following President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Belgrade and Kyiv’s continued refusal to recognize Kosovo’s independence, some critics suggested Albania should condition its support for Ukraine on political concessions regarding Pristina. Rama rejected this, stating that support for Ukraine’s sovereignty against Russian aggression is a matter of democratic values rather than a transactional relationship.
Simultaneously, Albania faces scrutiny regarding its democratic stability and social tensions. While Italy and the European Commission emphasize strategic agreements—such as migration management centers—European officials, including MEP Terry Reintke, have criticized the lack of attention paid to ongoing domestic protests and corruption concerns in Albania. The debate highlights a tension between the EU’s push for enlargement and the necessity of upholding democratic guarantees and addressing internal social unrest within candidate nations.
