Albania: Political criticism and new social welfare initiatives
Political tensions and social initiatives are prominent in Albania. Director Mevlan Shanaj expressed criticism of Prime Minister Edi Rama, noting a perceived deviation from early promises and expressing concern over corruption and the degradation of leadership within the government. Shanaj described the current state of the country as being in chaos.
Opposition leader Sali Berisha leveled serious accusations against Prime Minister Rama and former State Intelligence Service (SHISH) head Vlora Hyseni. Berisha alleged that Hyseni was used to surveil political opponents and that state secrets were transferred to criminal organizations. He further claimed that Hyseni’s actions served drug cartels and undermined national interests.
On the social front, Minister of Health and Social Welfare Klodiana Spahiu met with families of children with autism spectrum disorder. The meeting focused on improving early diagnosis, expanding specialized services, and creating a National Council for Children and Youth with Autism. Proposed measures include establishing a national network of case coordinators and improving psychiatric and dental care for neurodivergent children.
