Albania protests intensify as students demand Edi Rama's resignation
Violent anti-government protests have intensified across Albania, primarily led by students demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. The demonstrations, which have spread from the capital, Tirana, to cities such as Elbasan, Shkodra, Korca, and Vlora, are driven by grievances regarding high education costs, government corruption, and economic hardships.
A significant catalyst for the unrest is a luxury tourism development project on the Albanian coastline linked to Jared Kushner. Protesters have targeted government buildings, including the Ministry of Education and the Prime Minister’s office, as well as banks and private businesses. Clashes between demonstrators and riot police have resulted in significant casualties, with reports indicating over 150 injuries, including nearly 100 police officers, and hundreds of arrests.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has dismissed the calls for his resignation, attributing the escalating violence to “foreign hands” intent on destabilizing the country and hindering its European Union integration. He also noted that an explosive-laden drone intended to strike a government building was neutralized recently. While the government maintains that the protests are being manipulated by external actors and criminals, demonstrators continue to demand systemic electoral and educational reforms.
