Albania protests spark international calls for restraint and rule of law

International diplomats and officials have expressed concern regarding the escalation of anti-government protests in Albania, characterized by violence and damage to public and private property.

The Swiss Embassy in Albania has called for restraint from all parties, urging a preference for constructive dialogue and emphasizing the importance of peaceful assembly and media freedom in a democratic society. The embassy further requested that security forces act in accordance with international human rights standards.

In the United States, members of Congress have also weighed in on the crisis. Representative Joe Wilson stated that the Albanian people deserve “freedom, rule of law, and institutional accountability,” calling on the government to refrain from violence against protesters. Representative Keith Self described the demonstrations as a culmination of public distrust toward corrupt politicians and a reaction to the disregard for the rule of law, noting that leaders must address calls for fundamental changes to foster economic opportunity and regional stability.
